Twitch Bonus Gift Subs: Gift Five, Twitch Adds a Sixth
Twitch is running a promotion this week that ends before most people hear about it — and only if you are streaming in the right format. It is called Bonus Gift Subs: gift five subs in your channel and Twitch adds a sixth for free. Bonus Gift Subs are a limited-time top-up from Twitch on gifted subscriptions in channels that broadcast in Dual Format.
What Twitch is actually adding
The maths is straightforward. For every bundle of five gift subs bought in a participating channel, Twitch adds one more on top, matching the tier that was purchased — five Tier 2 gifts earn a Tier 2 bonus. Twitch covers it, not the person gifting.
There is a random element too: Twitch says it will drop a few extra bonus gift subs into participating channels during the week, with nobody buying anything first. You cannot plan around that, but it is one more reason to be live.
The catch: Dual Format only
Every Affiliate and Partner streaming in Dual Format during the window qualifies. No sign-up, no form, no waiting list — you enable Dual Format and go live, that is the whole requirement. If the format is new to you, we covered it in our piece on Dual Format streaming and 2K.
The window is tight: 20 August, 10am PT to 27 August, 10am PT — 17:00 UTC on both days. Check back next weekend and it is already over. If you had a bigger stream planned this week anyway, that is the one worth switching for.
What it means for your chat
Gift sub events come with an awkward side effect. When someone drops twenty subs at once, your chat becomes unreadable — twenty notifications in a row, and the person who paid for them disappears in the noise. That is where a bot earns its place. ByteMate — our hosted Twitch bot with chat alerts, overlays and giveaways — collapses a gift bomb into one message instead of twenty, naming the gifter, the amount and the tier.
You write that message yourself, and alongside the size of the current batch you can include how many subs that person has gifted in total — the number that makes your regulars visible. Anonymous gifts are respected and no name goes out.
If you are running a subathon, gifted subs are added to the clock automatically, scaled by tier and amount — in a week where Twitch tops up every fifth sub, that shows on the timer.
Three things worth checking first
Spend five minutes on the setup first. Confirm your gift sub alert is switched on and that the wording still sounds like you — most people configure it once and never look again. If you run an overlay in OBS, the alert box can show gifted subs with the gifter’s name, and a live label keeps your top gifter permanently visible. And your statistics keep a leaderboard of everyone who has gifted in your channel — after a week like this, that is where a proper thank-you in the next stream comes from.
All three are part of the free tier; the rest of the stream tools are on the overview page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to sign up for the promotion?
No. According to Twitch, every Affiliate and Partner streaming in Dual Format during the window is automatically eligible.
Does the gifter get the bonus sub, or my channel?
The extra sub goes into your channel as another gift — it reaches one more person in your community, and nobody pays for it.
Does it apply to Tier 2 and Tier 3?
Yes, the bonus sub matches the tier that was bought. The only stated exclusion: it cannot be stacked with Sponsored Subscriptions discounts.
How do I get started with ByteMate?
The promotion runs entirely on Twitch. ByteMate is there so the wave of subs does not get lost in your chat: one message instead of twenty, an alert on your overlay, and a gifter leaderboard afterwards. The core is free and a Twitch login is all it takes.
In short
One week, one condition, no paperwork: stream in Dual Format before 27 August and Twitch adds a sub to every fifth one your community gifts. This is not a commitment for the rest of the year, just a decision about a handful of streams — and if your community likes to gift anyway, it is an easy one. You can always see what is changing in the ByteMate tools on the status and changelog page.
