Twitch Donations Without a Registered Business: What You Actually Need
Someone in chat asks how they can send you a few euros, and you have no answer — because you assume you’d need to register a company first. Twitch donations are voluntary payments that arrive outside of subs and bits. Handling them takes a payment processor, and that processor needs to verify who you are — not to see a business registration. ByteMate, the all-in-one dashboard for your Twitch channel, handles the rest — and since the release in early September, more of it than before.
Two questions people keep mixing up
The first is your payment processor. Payments run through Stripe, and Stripe takes you on as a private individual. You’re not registering a company — you’re confirming your identity, a legal requirement for anyone moving money for someone else. Details are in Stripe’s identity verification documentation.
The second is tax. Whether your income eventually counts as a business is decided by your local tax authority, not by Stripe or ByteMate, and depends on how much comes in and how regularly. That’s a conversation for an accountant, not for this article.
Five minutes, then it goes live on its own
Before you click anything, your dashboard says what the sign-up involves: about five minutes, plus ID, IBAN, date of birth and address. None of it is visible to your viewers.
This is where people got stuck: onboarding finished, everything verified — and still no money coming in, because one more toggle waited in the dashboard and nothing pointed at it. Now your page goes live by itself once Stripe is done, and hands you the link. Switch it off later and it stays off; the automatic step happens once. Close the tab halfway through and you get a reminder after two days and a second a week later.
What it costs
No base fee, and no plan you have to buy first. ByteMate keeps 5% per donation, on top of Stripe’s transaction fee for the method used. Stripe pays the rest straight to your bank account — not into a balance you have to cash out.
The 5% only applies to donations processed by ByteMate. Display Ko-fi or Tipeeestream payments as a chat alert instead, and it costs nothing. The module is part of the free feature set, like the rest of the stream tools.
How your community can pay
Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay are always on and cover donors worldwide. Beyond that you switch on what your community actually uses: iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, EPS, Przelewy24, BLIK, Bizum, TWINT, Swish, MobilePay and Cash App Pay. Which ones you’re offered depends on the country of your Stripe account, not on where your viewers live.
SEPA Direct Debit is the odd one out: good for larger amounts, but not instant. The bank confirms it days later, and only then does the donation count — so the alert, the overlay and the subathon time arrive late. If the debit fails, nothing fires. Better a late alert than one for money that never turns up.
Putting the link where people ask for it
A donation page nobody knows about is worth nothing. One click creates the !donate command, with !tip as an alias, and the bot posts your link on request. Cooldown and permissions work like any other command. If your channel has been around a while you need to add it once — until then the bot stays silent, and that button is what it’s for.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ByteMate for this?
For this module, yes — it’s part of the dashboard. An account is free and accepting donations carries no base fee. Connect your Twitch account and you’ll find Donations in the sidebar.
Do I have to register a business?
Not to set this up — Stripe accepts you as a private individual. Whether your income counts as a business for tax purposes is separate and depends on your country. Take that one to an accountant.
Will donors see my real name?
No. Your details sit with Stripe and aren’t visible to donors. Enter your channel name as the business name during onboarding, and that’s what shows on the payment page and their bank statement.
Conclusion
The barrier was never the technology — it was assuming that a company registration and an accountant stand in the way. For the setup they don’t: ID, IBAN, five minutes, and the page now switches itself on. The rest of this release is in the status and changelog area.
